The U.S. Did Not Acquire the Canadian Northwest Territories
Correcting the Premise
The United States never acquired the Northwest Territories (Canada).
What Actually Happened
- 1670: Hudson's Bay Company granted Rupert's Land (draining into Hudson Bay).
- 1870: Canada purchased Rupert's Land & the North-Western Territory from HBC for £300,000.
- 1870: The Northwest Territories were created as a Canadian federal territory from these lands.
- 1905: Alberta & Saskatchewan carved out.
- 1999: Nunavut created from eastern NWT.
U.S. Northwest Territory ≠ Canadian NWT
The U.S. had its own Northwest Territory (1787–1803) south of the Great Lakes (see Article 104188). The Canadian territory is a separate, later creation.
