The Louisiana Purchase: Why the US Wanted More Than Just New Orleans

US Objectives in the 1803 Negotiations

The claim that the United States only wanted to buy New Orleans is historically inaccurate. President Jefferson's administration sought to secure West Florida as well, because:

  • West Florida had been under British control and was strategically important for Gulf Coast access.
  • American settlers had already migrated into the region.
  • Control of the Mississippi River and the port of New Orleans was incomplete without the adjacent territory.

Napoleon ultimately offered the entire Louisiana Territory, vastly exceeding the original U.S. objectives.
