Georgia's Five Geographic Regions: From Coast to Mountains

Georgia's 59,425 sq mi pack remarkable diversity into five distinct physiographic provinces, each shaping local ecology, economy, and culture.

1. Coastal Plain (South & East ~60% of state)

• Terrain: Flat, low-lying, sandy soils. Extends ~100 mi inland from Atlantic.
• Key Cities: Savannah (port, history), Brunswick (ports, shrimp), Valdosta, Albany, Statesboro.
• Economy: Agriculture (peanuts, cotton, pecans, Vidalia onions, blueberries), forestry, tourism (coast, Okefenokee), manufacturing (Gulfstream, paper).
• Climate: Humid subtropical. Mild winters, hot humid summers.

2. Piedmont (Central ~30%)

• Terrain: Rolling hills, red clay (Ultisols), hard rock near surface. Fall Line separates from Coastal Plain.
• Subregions: Upper (steeper) / Lower (gentler).
• Key Cities: Atlanta (capital, hub), Athens (UGA), Macon, Columbus, Augusta.
• Economy: Diversified—corporate HQs, logistics, film, healthcare, education, automotive (Kia), poultry.
• Climate: Temperate, 4 distinct seasons. Ice storms possible.

3. Blue Ridge Mountains (Northeast Corner)

• Terrain: Rugged, high peaks (>4,000 ft). Part of Appalachians.
• High Point: Brasstown Bald (4,784 ft) – highest in GA.
• Key Towns: Helen (Alpine tourism), Blue Ridge, Blairsville, Dahlonega (gold rush).
• Economy: Tourism (hiking, waterfalls, wineries, apples), retirement, arts.
• Climate: Coolest in state. Snow annually. High rainfall.

4. Valley and Ridge (Northwest)

• Terrain: Parallel limestone valleys & sandstone ridges (fold mountains). Great Valley (Coosa/Chattooga rivers).
• Key Cities: Rome, Dalton ("Carpet Capital of World"), Calhoun.
• Economy: Flooring (carpet), textiles, manufacturing, agriculture (poultry), tourism (caves, rivers).
• Climate: Temperate, moderate.

5. Appalachian Plateau (Extreme NW Corner - "TAG" corner)

• Terrain: Dissected plateau (Lookout Mtn, Sand Mtn). Canyons, waterfalls (Cloudland Canyon).
• Key Towns: LaFayette, Trenton, Summerville.
• Economy: Forestry, coal (historical), tourism (caving, climbing), small farming.
• Climate: Cool, high rainfall.

Together, they make Georgia a microcosm of the eastern US.
