Dominican Republic Leadership: President, Not Prime Minister

No Prime Minister in the Dominican System

The Dominican Republic operates under a presidential republic model. There is no position of prime minister. The head of state and head of government is the President, elected directly for a four-year term (renewable once).

Current Leadership

As of 2024, Luis Abinader serves as President. He won the 2020 election and was re-elected in May 2024 for a second term. The President appoints a Cabinet (Ministers) but does not share executive power with a prime minister.

Legislative & Judicial Branches

  • Congress (bicameral): Senate (32 seats) + Chamber of Deputies (190 seats).
  • Supreme Court of Justice heads the judiciary.

This structure differs from parliamentary systems (e.g., UK, Canada) where a prime minister leads the government while a monarch/president serves as ceremonial head of state.
