Kyrgyzstan is a republic with a parliamentary form of government. The head of state is the president, who is elected for a six-year term. The head of government is the prime minister, who is appointed by the president.

Kyrgyzstan is a member of the United Nations, the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE), the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), and the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO).
