First Portuguese Settlements in Brazil

The first permanent European settlement in the Americas was Salvador, Bahia (1534). Other early coastal settlements:

• São Vicente (1532)
• Porto Seguro (1534)
• Ilhéus (1534)
• Cananéia (1534)
• Olinda (1535)
• Recife (1548)
• Rio de Janeiro (1567)

All were in present‑day Bahia or nearby northeastern captaincies.
