Paddling the Missouri River: Longest in the Western Hemisphere
The Missouri River (2,341 miles / 3,768 km) is the Western Hemisphere's longest river, flowing from the Rocky Mountains to the Mississippi near St. Louis. The Missouri River Paddling Trail follows its length in three segments:
- Upper Missouri: Source to Fort Benton, MT—narrow, fast, stunning mountain scenery.
- Middle Missouri: Fort Benton to Bismarck, ND—wider, slower, relaxed paddling.
- Lower Missouri: Bismarck to St. Louis, MO—wide, slow, diverse landscapes (hills, bluffs, wetlands).
Tips for Paddlers
- Carry a detailed map.
- Prepare for dramatic water-level changes.
- Bring ample food, water, and proper clothing (always wear a life jacket).
- Avoid high water, fast currents, and shallow hazards.
A challenging but rewarding adventure through the American West.
