The Netherlands Has 12 Provinces, Not States
The Netherlands is a unitary state divided into 12 provinces (provincies)—not "states" in the federal sense. Each has a King's Commissioner, Provincial Council, and Provincial Executive, but sovereignty rests with the national government.
The 12 Provinces (North to South)
- Groningen
- Friesland (Fryslân) — co-official Frisian language
- Drenthe
- Overijssel
- Flevoland — reclaimed from IJsselmeer (1986, newest)
- Gelderland — largest by area
- Utrecht — smallest by area, central hub
- North Holland (Noord-Holland) — includes Amsterdam
- South Holland (Zuid-Holland) — includes Rotterdam, The Hague (seat of government)
- Zeeland — islands & peninsulas, delta works
- North Brabant (Noord-Brabant) — tech/design hub (Eindhoven)
- Limburg — southernmost, distinct dialect, Maastricht
Special Municipalities (Caribbean)
Bonaire, Sint Eustatius, Saba — "public bodies" within the Netherlands proper, not provinces.
Kingdom of the Netherlands ≠ Netherlands: the Kingdom includes Aruba, Curaçao, Sint Maarten (autonomous countries).
