What to Do to Move to Canada From USA?

Canada is a popular choice for many Americans wanting to move to another country, partly because of its proximity. If you're considering such a move, make sure you do your research and consider all aspects of such a move. It's a big undertaking that shouldn't be taken lightly.
  1. Immigrating to Canada

    • Start your immigration journey with research. Study Canada's regions to know what each has to offer. Check job availability. Have realistic expectations regarding the weather, the government and the health care system. Learn the local language, if necessary. Remember that Canada has two national languages, English and French.

Once you've done some research, consider making an extended visit to find the locale that best suits you and your needs. Apply for a work visa for your extended visit.

Unless you are retired or rich and can live without working, you'll need to consider the job opportunities. Canada has several immigration programs and you'll need to apply to the appropriate program based on your job skills. For instance, there is one program for skilled workers wanting to move to Quebec and another for anywhere else in Canada. There is a separate program if you are self-employed, an entrepreneur or investor. See the link in References for all the programs.

When traveling to Canada with the intent of staying, bring the required documents. You must carry a Canadian immigrant visa and Confirmation of Permanent Residence form for you and each member of your family. Each person must have a valid passport or other travel document. Provide two copies of a list stating all personal or household items in your possession and two copies of a list stating every item that will arrive later along with their monetary values. These documents must be readily available, so keep them on you, not packed.

The CIC website offers access to many immigrant-serving organizations. Contact one of these to help you transition into the Canadian lifestyle. They can help with housing issues, language education, and other issues.
