Sort your items into piles: thing that are too large for postal shipping; items needed immediately; and items that will not be needed for a few months.
Hire a company to pick up the items too large for postal shipping and the items needed immediately. The company will move the items for you via truck. Many companies offer free estimates such as Gateways or Premiere Van Lines. Provided that you have the correct documentation for your move, and all items are personal items you have owned for more than one year, there should be no charges at the border.
Ship smaller items that are not needed immediately through the post office. Shipping these items slowly means you will cut down significantly on the final expense.
Rent a moving truck to transport the items yourself. If you pay a fee, most moving truck rental companies will allow you to pick up the moving truck in the U.S. and drop it off in Canada.
Pack as efficiently as possible. Only rent a truck that is as large as you require. In most instances, moving trucks can only accomodate three people, so be sure to keep this in mind.
Ensure that you have all of the proper documentation and your passport. You may be subjected to a search when crossing. As long as all items are declared and are solely personal items that you have owned for longer than one year, you should not be charged any fees at the border.
