Look over the Australian government's Skilled Occupation List and select your job skills from the list (see Resources). If you have more than one skill, choose the job you intend to find in Australia.
Find the assessing authority for your job skill at immi.gov.au/asri. Send the assessing body school transcripts, diplomas, and work references as evidence of job skills. This body must approve you before you lodge your visa application.
Visit immi.gov.au/visawizard to find the visa that suits your needs. Complete an application and attach all supporting documents before submitting (see Resources).
Complete a criminal history record check when the Australian government prompts you to do so. You may need to submit several police certificates if you have resided in more than one country for at least 12 months in the past 10 years.
Have a health examination by a nominated Panel doctor when prompted. The Department of Immigration and Citizenship has a complete list of approved doctors (see Resources). The doctor will submit the results for you for final Australian approval.
Make long-term preparations six to eight months before moving. Book flights to Australia. Inform your children's school that you will be leaving. Give notice at work and to your landlord. If you own your house, put it on the market.
Begin making preparations for your arrival in Australia one to two months before moving. Hire transportation for your arrival. Open an Australian bank account and transfer funds. Register your children at Australian schools and begin job hunting in earnest.
Start selling unwanted furniture and other belongings that you cannot take to Australia. Donate items to charity if you cannot sell them.
Approximately two weeks before moving, say good bye to long-term subscriptions and accounts in the United Kingdom. Close internet, television, and phone accounts. Cancel magazine and newspaper subscriptions. Forward mail to your new postal address in Australia.
After arrival in Australia, apply for a Tax File Number. The Australian Department of Immigration recommends immigrants do this first, as this enables you to start working and earn an income in Australia. Seven to 10 days after arrival, visit a Medicare office and apply for medical insurance (see Resources). Apply for a driver's license, begin working, and search for long-term housing as you settle into your new life.
