Confederacy's Goal: Independence, Not Northern Conquest

The Confederacy (1861–1865) sought political independence from the United States to preserve its social-economic system (centered on slavery). It did not aim to conquer the Northern states. Its strategy was defensive: withstand Union pressure, gain foreign recognition, and exhaust Northern will to fight.
