Popular Dog Breeds in the Dominican Republic
The Dominican Republic has no official national dog breed, but two breeds stand out in popularity due to cultural and historical influences:
- Galgo Español (Spanish Greyhound): A legacy of Spanish colonial influence, these sighthounds are valued for hunting and as companions.
- American Pit Bull Terrier: Widely kept as family guardians and companions, though responsible ownership and local regulations vary.
Mixed-breed dogs (locally called satos or cocos) are also extremely common throughout the country, often adopted as street rescues or community dogs.
