KOA Camping in the Delaware Water Gap

The Delaware Water Gap is on the border of New Jersey and Pennsylvania, and is where the Delaware River slices through the Appalachian Mountains to create a gap. A water gap like this is rare geologically. The gap has been designated a national scenic river and recreational area. The gap is primarily used for recreation, such as boating, fishing, hiking and rock climbing. There is a KOA campground near the area.
  1. Location

    • The Delaware Water Gap KOA campground is about two miles from the water gap itself, near East Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania. The water gap is a paradise for canoeists, kayaks and nature lovers of all kinds.

The campground is also a jumping off point for the Pocono Mountains, many mountain ranges, water falls and countless trails. The Shawnee Mountain ski area is a half-mile away, making the campground a good spot for enjoying winter sports in the area. The campground is open--and often busy--year round.

    Features

    • The KOA at Water Gap has pull through RV sites with full hookups--water, sewer and electric--with 50 amp connections. On-site RV rentals are available. There are tent sites as well as group camping sites, with electricity and water available. This KOA also has one and two-room cabins as well as a lodge type cabin for small groups.

Cable-TV is available and WiFi is free in the campground. Bicycle rentals are available. The campground has a mini-golf course, a swimming pool and planned activities during the summer. Firewood and LP Gas are available at the convenience store.

Pets are allowed in the campground, and one of the cabins allows pets.

    Activities

    • From the beginning of April through November activities are planned each weekend. Nearly every weekend has its own theme, such as Earth Day, Easter or Chippy's Birthday. Chippy is the campground's pet chipmunk.

There is a Hawaiian Luau weekend which includes pineapple bowling, or there is a chocolate weekend where events include candy bar bingo and an ice cream social. On Mother's Day there is a special craft for mom, and mothers play mini golf free.

Crafts are available for all ages, as well as hayrides, movies, horseshoes, fireworks and special competitions of many kinds.

    Water Fun

    • Several outfitters offer canoe, kayak and float trips of different lengths down the Delaware River. The outfitters operate in the national recreation area and are licensed by the National Park Service.

These are generally group trips. Meet at the north end and join your group--reservations are recommended--and set off on your adventure. You will be picked up at the end of your trip and taken back to where you started to get back to your vehicle.

The river is relatively rapid, but safe for all ages. The outfitters supply all needed boats and safety equipment.

    Trails

    • There are many trails around the campground, and in the water gap area. The trails have colored dots to guide you through the forest. The Red Dot Trail goes to the top of Kittatinny Ridge which has a panoramic view of the area. It is a rough one-hour hike each way and rises 600 feet. It is rather eroded due to rains and many hikers.

The Gray Dot Trail is very steep and goes to the top of the gap along a ridge. It intersects with other trails. Go up the Gray Dot Trail and back down the Red Dot Trail for a good two-and-a-half hour hike.

The Blue Dot Trail also goes to the top. It is about three miles and not as steep as the Red Dot Trail.

The Appalachian Trail crosses the Delaware River on Route 80 and goes to Sunfish Pond, and then through Point State Park, as it leaves the Water Gap area.

    Winter Fun

    • Camelback Ski Mountain is 800 feet high and near the campground. It has 34 ski trails and the area is lighted for night skiing. There are trails for advanced, intermediate and beginners.

The Shawnee Ski Mountain has skiing, snowboarding and snowtubing throughout the winter.
