Located in Central Washington, three hours from both Seattle and Portland, the Gorge Amphitheatre has been voted "the best major outdoor concert venue in North America" by Pollstar magazine. Known to concert goers and campers simply as "The Gorge," this popular attraction situated near the Columbia River cliffs is the perfect venue for spending a night listening to music under the stars. One of the best ways to visit the Gorge is by camping on the Gorge Campgrounds.
Whether you are pitching a tent or parking a camper, you'll find ample space at the Gorge Campground located in the grassy area above the amphitheatre. As of 2009, for $40 a vehicle, guests can access hot showers, on-site security, running water, portable bathrooms and recreational opportunities on basketball and volleyball courts. Walk-ins or motorcycle riders are charged only $10 per person per day. The campgrounds are located just a short walk from the amphitheatre, and shuttle service is available for premier campers.
The weather at the Gorge is always a hot topic. During the spring and summer months, the days are hot and dry and the nights can be cold. Visitors should drink lots of water and try to find good shade. Water stations are located throughout the Gorge, and some performers and staffers have been known to spray the crowd. The Gorge advises visitors to wear hats, apply loads of sunscreen and make sure to bring jackets, sweaters, or blankets for night time events and camping. Campers should bring large supplies of water, and make sure to have shaded areas in their camps.
When you decide to camp at the Gorge , you can either select regular camping or premier camping. RVs are welcome on site, but there are no hook ups. Premier guests enjoy many privileges including a reserved space surrounded by a cedar fence, access to private restrooms with showers and toilet facilities, electrical receptacles, and a free shuttle service to the shows. General amenities include portable water and hand wish sinks, 24-hour security, convenience store with ATM, lots of portable bathrooms, and much more. If you go, not only will you find great camping, but you can listen to national acts such as the Police and Joe Cocker as well as annual summer music festivals.
