In addition to its verdant Mediterranean coastline, Pyrenees-Orientales is home to the famed alpine Pyrenees Mountains that attract enthusiasts of winter sports. Campsites spot the entire coast, with as many as 20 organized camp facilities including showers, spas, recreational activities and many pools. If you seek a more primitive camping experience, there is no shortage of coastal, tent-only campsites. Yelloh! Village, a campground company that offers sites throughout Europe, manages Le Brasilia, a lush and spacious campground just outside of Canet-En-Roussillon. Yelloh! Village is known for its well maintained campsites with reasonable rates and plenty of activities for anyone in the family. Le Brasilia provides tent-pitching sites with electricity and water supply that are walking distance from the Mediterranean.
Herault’s world-famous vineyards, amid castle-spotted hillsides and sweeping plains, are perfectly complimented by the Mediterranean’s gentle sea breeze. The coastline’s 60-mile stretch provides roughly 60 coastal campgrounds -- nearly one per mile. Campgrounds range from very primitive, with only space to pitch a tent, to full “vacation-style” campgrounds that may seem closer to all-inclusive resorts. The Lou Labech campsite, just 20 minutes southwest of Marseillan, is highly regarded as a cozy family campsite. Run by the Goudard family at their 3-acre, beach-side home for over 25 years, it provides both large tents and canvas cabins for rent.
Aude, named after the river that runs through this department, perfectly realizes the image that comes to mind when fantasizing of provincial southern France. Valleys open up to medieval towns that have not lost their charm. The eastern part of Aude borders the Mediterranean, and fortunately accommodates campers. Only four towns have coastal campgrounds, and they are relatively primitive, with only three of 20 offering permanent-structure camping. Of these coastal campgrounds, the most highly recommended is Campsite Ensoya. Facilities are clean, and you have the option of staying in basic tents, lodges, bungalows or equipped tents. In addition to various entertaining activities at the campsite, Ensoya will put you only 2 1/2 miles from Aude's Sigean African Nature Reserve.
The department of Gard is perhaps best known for its ancient castles and bridges, which are highlighted on a backdrop of provincial marshes and jagged, lush mountains. The department is additionally known for its tiny Mediterranean coast only because of a famed beach: Espiguette. It's arguably the longest and most pristine beach in Languedoc-Roussillon, and you can pitch a tent right on its sand. Camping de L'Espiguette is an organized campground that allows you to choose your campsite. It offers the basic amenities for a comfortable family vacation, and it's still close enough to the beach that you will probably spend most of your time enjoying the warm Mediterranean waters.
