Camping at the Pocono Mountains

A camping trip has been calling to you. And you've picked your destination: the beautiful Pocono Mountains in northeastern Pennsylvania. There's plenty of information about the Poconos when it comes to gaming and skiing--but not so much in the way of camping.
  1. Find a Campsite

    • There are scores of good campsites to choose from in the Pocono Mountains. The most comprehensive database of these camp spots is found on the website of the Pocono Mountains Visitor's Bureau (see References). You can even narrow your search based on region, town and campground rating. Once you've picked a suitable campsite, you're almost ready to go.

    Don't Forget to Reserve It!

    • The Pocono Mountains are quite popular as a camping destination. Some of the more highly rated campsites are heavily booked. This is why it is vital to reserve your campsite in advance. This doesn't apply to all sites--you're almost certain to find one with some free spots if you don't mind driving around a bit--but if you're looking for a good view of the lake, or a right-out-of-your-tent shot of Big Pocono, you're going to want to think about reserving that campground at least several weeks in advance.

    Check Dates, Prices, and Amenities

    • The last thing you want to do is arrive at your reserved campground only to find that there's no hot water. For some people, that means little--but for others, it's quite important. Some sites have rustic bunk houses. Others sport little huts. Others are simply cleared areas for setting up tents. Figure out what you need--there are enough campsites in the Pocono Mountains that you're sure to find one that matches your desires. Each campsite comes with a price tag, too, so don't forget to check that out beforehand. Finally, some campgrounds shut down during the winter months, or at other times during the year, so make sure yours will be open when you arrive.
