Places of Interest in Texas

As the second-largest state in America, Texas has a variety of both practical and unusual places of interest. This leaves travelers with the problematic situation of overlooking attractions that give this state its character, and even these suggestions don't quite cover all that Texas has to offer.
  1. North Texas

    • The Eiffel Tower of Paris, Texas

      Located in northeast Texas, the town of Paris was named the "Best Small Town in Texas" by Kevin Heubusch in his book "The New Rating Guide to Life in America's Small Cities." Its signature tourist attraction is its replica of the Eiffel Tower, which was created by the Boiler Makers Union Local #902 in 1995. Texas' Eiffel Tower is the third largest in the world. Adding to its charm is the 10-foot-wide, 4 1/2-foot-tall red steel Stetson cowboy hat sitting on top of the tower.

      Billy Bob's Texas

      Known as the the "World's Largest Honky Tonk," this famous night club, located in Fort Worth, has 127,000 square feet of space with live pro bull riding, 32 individual bar stations and a rated capacity of more than 6,000 people. Billy Bob's Texas has even been named Country Music Club of the Year five times by the Academy of Country Music, as well as twice by the Country Music Association. It has also won the Country Music Association's Venue of the Year award.

      Dallas

      The bustling city of Dallas is home to the famous amusement park, Six Flags over Dallas, and to the largest zoo in Texas.

    East Texas

    • The Orange Show

      Residing in the city of Houston, the Orange Show is a 3,000-square-foot architectural maze of art created by the late Jefferson Davis McKissack. The Orange Show contains several upper decks with a gift shop, museum and oasis, as well as a wishing pond and stage. McKissack created his Orange Show to promote his theories of good health achieved through nutrition, hard work and eating oranges.

      Johnson Space Center

      Known for the slogan, "Houston, we have a problem," this location of NASA's offers tours through its facilities that interest both children and adults.

      Blue Bell Ice Cream tour

      Come tour where the famous Blue Bell Ice Cream is made in the town of Brenham.

    South and Coastal Texas

    • Galveston

      This surf-side town is home to Galveston Beach and the famous Kettle House created 50 years ago by an unknown man who supposedly built storage tanks for companies. Citizens of Galveston know little of this man, but every few months a man is seen making repairs to the house only to disappear afterward.

      USS Lexington

      Right next to the Texas State Aquarium in Corpus Christi is the famous USS Lexington aircraft carrier from World War II. The ship is available for both educational tours and the opportunity to stay on-board overnight.

    West Texas

    • Big Bend River Tour

      Right outside of Big Bend National Park, these river tours take you through the heart of the canyons along the Texas border. Feel free to choose from guided raft tours, canoe trips or kayaking along the river. An assortment of holiday specials---such as romantic river tours at dusk on Valentine's Day---are also available.

      "TEXAS! The Musical"

      With the slogan, "Only a state as big as Texas could host a show as big as TEXAS!" "TEXAS! The Musical" is one of the largest productions in America, featuring more than 60 actors, singers and dancers. "TEXAS!" hits the stage 25 miles from Amarillo in Palo Duro State Park. It offers behind the scene tours as well as a spectacular fireworks show.

    Central Texas

    • Congress Avenue Bridge

      Located in Austin, the Congress Avenue Bridge is home to the largest urban bat colony in North America. With an estimated 1.5 million Mexican free-tail bats under the bridge, the city began offering guided riverboat tours. You can even find places to spot the bats for free as they fly away every dusk in search of food.

      Cathedral of Junk

      Austin is also home to the Cathedral of Junk. Created by Vince Hannenmann, the cathedral consists of 60 tons of scrap metal and miscellaneous items. The Cathedral of Junk is considered a must-see art piece in Austin.

      The Riverwalk

      As one of the most visited places in Texas, the San Antonio Riverwalk is home to a variety of hotels, restaurants and entertainment. Go on a romantic carriage ride along the river or enjoy a fun day at Six Flags San Antonio.
