Syria Is Not on the Arabian Peninsula

Syria is in the Levant (Eastern Mediterranean), not the Arabian Peninsula.

Geographic Boundaries

  • North: Turkey
  • East: Iraq
  • South: Jordan
  • Southwest: Israel
  • West: Lebanon + Mediterranean Sea (110 mi / 180 km coastline)

Arabian Peninsula Countries

Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Oman, UAE, Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait (+ Jordan/Iraq sometimes included in "Arabian Plate" geologically, but not geographically).

Why It Matters

  • Climate: Syria = Mediterranean (coast) + semi-arid steppe (interior); Peninsula = hyper-arid desert.
  • History: Levant = crossroads of empires (Egypt, Hittite, Assyrian, Persian, Greek, Roman, Islamic, Crusader, Ottoman); Peninsula = Islamic heartland, oil.
  • Geopolitics: Syria's wars (2011–) involve Turkey, Iran, Russia, US — distinct from Gulf dynamics.
