Alentejo occupies the south-central portion of mainland Portugal.

• North: Borders the Ribatejo (Centro) region (Tagus River).
• South: Borders the Algarve region.
• East: Borders Spain's Extremadura region.
• West: Atlantic Ocean coastline.

Characterized by rolling plains (peneplains), cork oak forests (montado), olive groves, vineyards, whitewashed hilltop towns (Évora, Monsaraz, Marvão), and a rugged, uncrowded coast. It's Portugal's largest region by area but least densely populated.
