Why most people live in the northern part of Russia?

Most people do NOT live in the northern part of Russia. In fact, the majority of Russia's population is concentrated in the western part of the country, with Moscow and St. Petersburg being the two largest cities. The northern part of Russia is sparsely populated due to the harsh climate and difficult living conditions.
