How to Camp in Indiana State Parks

Contrary to popular belief, there is more than corn in Indiana. This state boasts diverse landscapes, wildlife and attractions that make it ideal for a family vacation. For your next outdoor adventure, consider camping in one of Indiana's 24 state parks. Just follow these easy steps to plan your trip.

      Visit the Indiana (DNR) Department of Natural Resources' website and research the 24 state parks available in the state. There is a state park in every region of Indiana with a range of camping options and nearby attractions.       Choose a park with the amenities you want. All of Indiana's state parks offer rustic campsites, while some provide electric and RV sites as well.

      Use the Indiana DNR reservation system or call the park of your choice to reserve a space at the campground. Cabins and RV sites fill up quickly and need to be reserved well in advance. As well, during holidays such as Memorial Day, Labor Day and the 4th of July, even rustic sites are booked to capacity. Plan your trip well in advance for these times.

      Check in with the front gate once you arrive. They will direct you to the camping gate where the staff will have information on your reservation and campsite.

      Visit the park's visitor's center after checking in and pick up a map of the park. This will offer information on the various recreational and education activities as well as provide a detailed map of the grounds and camping area so you can find restrooms, dumping facilities, camp stores and other necessities.
