Was the Republic of Texas larger or smaller than state today?
The Republic of Texas was significantly larger than the present-day U.S. state of Texas. It originally claimed control over most of the area between the Nueces River and the Rio Grande (which was disputed with Mexico and later became part of the United States under the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo), while its northern boundary went as far north as the 42nd parallel (now part of Colorado, Wyoming, Kansas, and Nebraska). It also claimed an undefined extension from its northwestern corner that encompassed parts of present-day Oklahoma, Colorado, Wyoming, Kansas, and New Mexico.
