What was Brazil like before independence?

Prior to its independence, Brazil was a colony of the Kingdom of Portugal. During the colonial period, Brazil was governed by a Portuguese viceroy, who was appointed by the Portuguese king. The viceroyalty of Brazil was divided into several captaincies, each of which was governed by a captain-general.

The economy of colonial Brazil was based on the production of agricultural commodities, such as sugar, tobacco, and coffee. These crops were grown on large plantations, which were worked by African slaves. The Portuguese authorities also encouraged the development of mining, particularly gold and diamond mining.

The colonial period was a time of great cultural exchange between Brazil and Portugal. The Portuguese language and culture were introduced to Brazil, and the indigenous cultures of Brazil were influenced by Portuguese customs.

In the early 19th century, a movement for independence began to grow in Brazil. This movement was led by a group of intellectuals and political leaders, who were inspired by the French Revolution and the American Revolution. The Brazilian War of Independence began in 1822, and it ended in 1823 with the independence of Brazil.
