What were the border states that divided union and confederate States in 1861?

The seven states that were termed "border states" during the American Civil War of 1861–65 were as follows:

* Delaware

* Kentucky

* Maryland

* Missouri

* North Carolina

* Tennessee

* Virginia

These states initially chose to remain neutral when the Southern states began seceding from the Union over slavery. Their location along the Mason-Dixon Line and the Ohio River made them politically and geographically critical. Although they were officially loyal to the Union throughout the war, many people from these border states fought on both sides of the conflict.
