What did Columbus find instead of a trade route to Asia?

Christopher Columbus set sail in 1492 in search of a new route to Asia, but instead he stumbled upon the Americas. He and his crew made landfall in the Caribbean, which they believed to be part of Asia. Columbus never realized that he had discovered a new continent, and he died in 1506 still believing that he had reached Asia.
