The Grand Canyon is a gorge carved by the Colorado River in Arizona, United States. It is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the United States. The canyon is 277 miles (446 km) long, 18 miles (29 km) wide, and attains a depth of over a mile (6,000 feet or 1,800 meters). The Grand Canyon was carved over a period of 17 million years. The Colorado River began to cut the canyon about 17 million years ago, but the Grand Canyon as we know it today began to form about 6 million years ago, when the Colorado River began to carve its way through the soft sandstone and limestone of the Colorado Plateau. The Grand Canyon is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World.
