Parks in Managua, Nicaragua

The city of Managua is situated in central Nicaragua, on Lago de Managua and surrounded by active volcanoes. The city has been devastated by earthquakes several times in the last century. The latest, in 1972, killed more than 10,000 people. Rebuilding efforts have been somewhat haphazard. Successive governments have established parks to build monuments, but there are also recreational and educational parks scattered throughout the city.
  1. Parque Histórico Loma de Tiscapa

    • The Parque Histórico Loma de Tiscapa was established as a monumental park, and successive regimes have added and changed monuments: The former Monumento Roosevelt is now a monument to those who died in the revolution. The park was also where the palace of president Samoza was situated. The easiest recognizable landmark in the city, the silhouette of president Sandino, sits centrally in the park.

    Parque Nacional Volcán Masaya

    • Somewhat to the south of the city center is one of the most spectacular volcanoes in the western hemisphere. The Parque Nacional Volcán Masaya is an active steam volcano, and it is possible to drive up to the rim and see the lava bubbling at the bottom of the crater. There are guided tours, around the crater at night and bike tours around other parts of the volcano. Guided tours also include areas where it may be too risky to go without a guide. The entrance to the park is 75 Cordobas for foreigners and 20 Cordobas for nicaraguans.

    Parque Central

    • The Central Park of Managua is located close to the former Cathedral of Santiago and the Palacio Nacional (now the National Palace of Culture, Palacio Nacional de Cultura). It was inaugurated in 1899. The park now holds an outdoor stage, the Templo de la Musica, as well as statues and mausoleums of Nicaraguan national figures. Bordering on the Central Park is the Parque Rubén Darío, with several more monuments and a cultural center.
