U.S. City Sharing Its State's Name

Oklahoma City** is the capital and largest city of **Oklahoma**—the only U.S. state capital sharing its state's name. Other cities named after their state (but not capitals):

  • **Kansas City** (Missouri/Kansas) — mostly in MO.
  • **Iowa City** (Iowa) — former capital.
  • **Nevada City** (California) — Gold Rush town.
  • **Colorado City** (Arizona/Texas/Colorado) — small towns.
  • **Washington, D.C.** — District, not state.

Oklahoma City (pop. ~680,000; metro 1.4M) became capital in 1910 (guthrie → OKC). The name was chosen for the 1889 Land Run's "Oklahoma Station."
