In Which Country Are the Sandinistas Active?

The Sandinistas (Frente Sandinista de Liberación Nacional, FSLN) are a political party in Nicaragua. Founded in 1961, they led the 1979 revolution that ousted the Somoza dictatorship. Daniel Ortega, a founding member, has served as president since 2007 (previously 1985–1990). The FSLN remains Nicaragua's dominant ruling party, controlling the presidency, legislature, and most institutions. The name honors Augusto César Sandino, who fought U.S. occupation in the 1920s–30s.
