Was Italy the First Trade Area? A Historical Clarification

There is no historical basis for labeling Italy "the first trade area." While Italy's geography (coastline, rivers, mountains) fostered trade throughout history, many regions — Mesopotamia, the Indus Valley, China, the Mediterranean Levant — developed extensive trade networks at different times. Italy's prominence came later, notably during the Roman era and the medieval/Renaissance maritime republics (Venice, Genoa).
