Does the Netherlands Have an Independence Day?
No. The Netherlands does not celebrate an "Independence Day." Instead, it observes two key national commemorations:
- Liberation Day (Bevrijdingsdag) – 5 May – Marks the 1945 surrender of German forces in the Netherlands. A public holiday every 5 years (next: 2025, 2030); otherwise a day of reflection.
- King's Day (Koningsdag) – 27 April – Celebrates the monarch's birthday (currently King Willem-Alexander). Nationwide street markets, orange-clad festivities, boat parties.
Note: "Holland" refers only to the two western provinces (North & South Holland); the country is the Netherlands.
