Where do hot cross buns come from Italy or England?

Hot cross buns are traditionally associated with England, and are widely consumed during the Easter period. While some countries, such as Greece, have a similar sweet bread called tsoureki, the modern hot cross bun is believed to have originated in the United Kingdom.
