The currency in Germany before the euro was the Deutsche Mark (DEM). The Deutsche Mark was the official currency of West Germany from 1948 until 1990, and of a unified Germany from 1990 until 2002. It was subdivided into 100 pfennigs. The Deutsche Mark was replaced by the euro on 1 January 2002 at a conversion rate of 1 euro = 1.95583 Deutsche Marks.
