Restaurant Chains in Europe

Modern Europe has embraced restaurant chains, especially those with American roots and ones that deal in American-style fast food. The quickening pace of modern life and the inclination of children and adolescents for foods like hamburgers, seemingly regardless of origin, have helped drive the growth in recent decades. Europe is also home to European-bred chains and those from the Middle East and Asia. In Europe, these are not solely fast-food operations. One type is the multi-unit pub, often licensed by a brewery, which is common in the United Kingdom.
  1. McDonald's

    • Though synonymous with globalization used in the pejorative, and whose mere presence near the Spanish Steps in Rome instigated the Slow Food movement, McDonald's is the most numerous and most visited restaurant chain in Europe. Its 6,400-plus branches are located throughout the continent. Though far fewer in number than the United States, these are generally much higher grossing than their American counterparts and make Europe McDonald's biggest region in terms of revenue.

McDonald's offerings are mostly known for its American-style hamburgers and fries, but menus are somewhat customized for each locale, and ever-evolving. For example, beer and wine are served in most European outlets, Reblochon cheese tops burgers in France, porridge is served in Britain, and pasta is cooked in Italy.

    Pizza Hut

    • Founded in 1958 in Wichita, Kansas, Pizza Hut is now part of Yum! Brands that also owns Kentucky Fried Chicken, another international chain with a large European presence. Along with Domino's and Pizza Inn, Pizza Hut began in a midwestern American city with founders who had no heritage from Naples, the birthplace of pizza, or even Italy. It used franchising to help spread pizza throughout the country so that it eventually became an American staple by the 1970s. Pizza Hut's affordably priced American-style pizzas in several variations have become a hit in many European countries. There are hundreds of locations in the continent, both franchised and company owned.

    Vapiano

    • Vapiano is an example of a European restaurant chain. This is an operation based in Germany that serves Italian-inspired food via counter service in settings that feature attractive, modern, minimalist designs. There are over 60 locations in Europe. The menu includes antipasti like bruschetta, pizzas, house-made pastas, entrée salads and desserts. There are a good number of food options, including 15 to 20 different pizzas and a similar number of pasta preparations. An emphasis is placed on fresh herbs, integral to Italian cooking. Here you can dine inexpensively and also in a healthy manner. Beer, wine and liquor are served, too.
