Eight European Countries Whose Names End in "Land"
Europe has several sovereign nations and recognized territories whose English names end with the suffix "-land." Here are eight:
- Iceland — Nordic island nation in the North Atlantic
- Finland — Nordic country bordering Sweden, Norway, and Russia
- Ireland — Sovereign state occupying most of the island of Ireland
- Netherlands — Often called Holland; low-lying Western European nation
- Poland — Central European country with Baltic Sea coastline
- Switzerland — Landlocked Alpine nation in Central Europe
- Greenland — Autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark (geographically North American but politically European)
- Scotland — Constituent country of the United Kingdom, occupying northern Great Britain
Note: "England" also ends in "-land" but is a constituent country within the UK, not a sovereign state. The Faroe Islands and Shetland are autonomous or subnational regions with the suffix as well.
