Rome itself is a dense urban capital with minimal extractive resources, but the surrounding Lazio region provides agricultural, mineral, and energy assets that have sustained the city since antiquity.
Volcanic soils and a Mediterranean climate support diverse cultivation: wine grapes (Frascati, Est! Est!! Est!!!), olives, wheat, vegetables, and stone fruits. The Agro Pontino reclaimed marshlands are now intensive farmland.
Volcanic activity (Colli Albani, Vulsini) creates hot springs and steam vents. Geothermal plants near Cesano and Torre Alfina generate electricity and supply district heating.
Ancient Rome exploited these same resources: travertine for monuments, grain from the hinterland, thermal baths from volcanic springs. Today, they underpin Lazio's agri-food exports, construction materials, and renewable energy goals.
