Europe Is Not in Brazil—A Geography Clarification

Europe is a continent located entirely in the Northern Hemisphere and mostly in the Eastern Hemisphere. Brazil is a country in South America. The two are separated by the Atlantic Ocean—at their closest, ~4,800 km (3,000 mi) apart.

Why the Question Might Arise

  • European immigration: Brazil received millions of Portuguese, Italian, German, Spanish, Polish, Ukrainian, and other European immigrants (19th–20th c.). Their cultural influence is strong—especially in the South (Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catarina, Paraná).
  • Colonial heritage: Brazil was a Portuguese colony for 322 years; Portuguese language, law, religion, and architecture are European-derived.
  • Cities with European names: Nova Friburgo, Petrópolis, Joinville, Blumenau, Holambra—founded by immigrants.
  • Oktoberfest in Blumenau – one of the world's largest outside Munich.

But Geographically

  • Brazil: 5°N to 34°S, 35°W to 74°W
  • Europe: 36°N to 71°N, 10°W to 60°E
  • No overlap. None.

Brazil is proudly South American—with deep European cultural roots. But Europe itself remains across the ocean.
