Vienna does not lie directly on the main channel of the Danube River. Instead, the city center borders the Danube Canal (Donaukanal), a regulated side arm. The primary Danube flow passes north of the historic core, separated by the Donauinsel (Danube Island), a 21-km recreational strip created during flood-control engineering in the 1970s–80s.
