European Demand for Chinese Goods: Silk, Porcelain, Tea, Spices, and More

Top Trade Goods (Pre-19th Century)

  1. Silk: Luxury fabric; light, valuable, high demand for clothing, upholstery.
  2. Porcelain: "White gold"; delicate, impermeable; status symbol for European elites.
  3. Tea: Became daily staple in Britain, Netherlands, Russia; massive import volumes.
  4. Spices: Pepper, cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg – via Chinese entrepôts or direct.
  5. Gold & Silver: China was a net importer of silver (paid for tea/silk), but also exported some gold artifacts.
  6. Precious Stones: Jade, rubies, sapphires – for jewelry.
  7. Art & Antiques: Paintings, lacquerware, furniture, bronzes – collector items.
