How did Austria get its name?
Austria derives its name from the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Its name probably means "realm of the East", from Old High German *Ostarrîchi ("eastern realm"; *Ost- = "eastern", *rîchi = "realm"), and Latin Austria. The name was first attested in 996 as Ostarrîchi, referring to a margraviate established in the late 9th century by the German House of Babenberg. The Ostarrîchi referred to the territory which was to develop into the modern-day state of Austria.
