Thessalonica to Thessaloniki: The 1912 Name Change

The ancient city of Thessalonica officially became Thessaloniki in 1912, following its liberation from Ottoman rule during the First Balkan War and its incorporation into the modern Greek state.

The name change reflected the city's reintegration into Greece and the revival of its ancient Greek identity. "Thessaloniki" is the Greek form, while "Thessalonica" was the Latinized version used internationally during Ottoman times.

Today, Thessaloniki is Greece's second-largest city and a major cultural and economic center.
