Who controlled Switzerland before it became a country?

Switzerland was originally inhabited by various Celtic and Helvetic tribes. In 15 BC, the area was conquered by the Roman Empire and became part of the province of Gallia Belgica. After the fall of the Western Roman Empire, the region was ruled by various Germanic tribes, including the Alemanni and the Burgundians. In the 13th century, the Swiss Confederacy was formed by three cantons (states): Uri, Schwyz, and Unterwalden. The confederacy grew over time to include 13 cantons by 1513. Switzerland became a sovereign state in 1648 with the signing of the Peace of Westphalia, which ended the Thirty Years' War.
