After World War II, Germany was divided into two countries: the Federal Republic of Germany (West Germany) and the German Democratic Republic (East Germany). West Germany was democratic, with a free market economy and a parliamentary democracy. East Germany was communist, with a centrally planned economy and a one-party state. The two countries were reunited in 1990 after the fall of the Berlin Wall.
