Where does the name of Paris come from?
The name Paris is believed to have originated with the Parisii, a Celtic tribe that inhabited the area around the River Seine in ancient Gaul. Paris was originally known as Lutetia Parisiorum, meaning "muddy settlement of the Parisii", due to its location on the banks of the river. During the Roman Empire, the city was renamed Parisii, and eventually shortened to Paris.
