What is Greater Serbia?
Greater Serbia is a term used to describe a political ideology or project that seeks to establish a Serbian state that includes all areas traditionally inhabited by Serbs, or an ethnically pure Serbian state. This would involve the unification of all territories where Serbs currently live or have lived historically, regardless of existing political boundaries. It includes the current state of Serbia, Republika Srpska (a de facto Serb republic within Bosnia and Herzegovina), northern Kosovo, eastern Croatia, Montenegro, parts of North Macedonia, Albania, and parts of Bulgaria and Greece.
While the concept of Greater Serbia has existed for centuries, it gained prominence in the late 1980s during the breakup of Yugoslavia, when it was used to justify Serbia's expansionist policies and ultimately led to the Yugoslav Wars. Although this project ultimately failed, the belief in the creation of a Serbian state incorporating these traditionally Serbian regions remains present to varying degrees and continues to generate political agitation from some Serbian organizations and individuals.
