What is the history of Andorra?

The Early History of Andorra

The earliest evidence of human habitation in Andorra dates back to the Neolithic period (around 4,000 BCE). During this period, small communities of hunter-gatherers lived in the valleys of the Pyrenees mountains.

In the 2nd century BCE, the Romans invaded the Iberian Peninsula and incorporated the area of Andorra into their empire. The Romans built several roads and bridges in Andorra, which facilitated trade and travel.

In the 5th century CE, the Western Roman Empire collapsed and Andorra was briefly ruled by the Visigoths. In the 8th century, the Moors invaded the Iberian Peninsula and ruled Andorra for several centuries.

The Formation of Andorra

In the 10th century, the Count of Urgell, a Catalan nobleman, defeated the Moors and incorporated Andorra into his territory. The Count of Urgell then granted Andorra to the Bishop of Urgell in 1035.

The Bishop of Urgell became the co-prince of Andorra, along with the Count of Foix. The two co-princes ruled Andorra jointly for centuries, and they established a system of government that is still in place today.

Andorra in the Modern Era

In the 13th century, Andorra was recognized as a sovereign principality by both Spain and France. Andorra remained a neutral country during the major European wars of the 19th and 20th centuries.

In 1993, Andorra adopted a new constitution that established it as a parliamentary democracy. The constitution also established universal suffrage for all Andorran citizens over the age of 18.
