Cruises of Norway

Visiting Norway is a must for those who enjoy a panorama of deep green hills, moss-covered rocks and dramatic cliffs. Few countries can rival the beauty and drama of Norway's fjords, and perhaps the best way to see them is on a cruise. Major cruise lines operate tours that make a few stops in Norway, while smaller cruise lines offer weeklong trips up the coast to the Arctic Circle.
  1. Hurtigruten

    • This cruise offers 12-, six- and seven-day trips that leave from either Bergen or Kirkenes. This is a nontraditional cruise that stops at more than 30 ports-of-call and that spends as little as 45 minutes at a port or as long as six hours. The cruise will take you into the Arctic Circle, and in the summer, you are able to see the midnight sun and in the winter you can see the northern lights, or Aurora Borealis. Some of the ports are Trondheim, Mehamn and Hammerfest, ports that are rarely visited by the larger, international cruise lines. This cruise line offers more Norwegian ports than most other lines and may appeal to those who are interested in the Norwegian coast.

    Silversea

    • Silversea is a Danish cruise line that features smaller, more intimate luxury ships. The capacity is just under 300 passengers, and it offers eight-, 15- and 17-day itineraries of the fjords, leaving from and arriving in Copenhagen. The cruise is significantly more expensive than other cruises in Norway, because all amenities are included in the price of your ticket, including fitness classes, butler services, all drinks and gratuities. Some of their stops include Flam, where you can take a scenic train ride through the mountains, and Alesund, a strawberry-growing region where you can bus up to a hilltop to see one of the most spectacular panoramas in Norway.

The cruise leaves and arrives in English-speaking ports, making travel easier for people who speak only English. Their ports include Geiranger, where visitors can see a typical isolated fjord town and watch traditional fishing and fish-preserving techniques, and Hellesylt, which is laced with waterfalls, steep rocky cliffs and ice blue water.

The cruise visits Stavanger, the home of Norway's oldest and best preserved cathedral, and Bergen, the intellectual capital of Norway, where you can ride the funicular over the coast dotted with brightly colored boats and buildings. The cruise also enters the Arctic Circle and promises views of the midnight sun in the summer at the northernmost European port, Honningsvag. The cruise is on one of the line's smaller ship with only 670 passengers and more than 200 balcony staterooms.
