What Bodies of Water Are in Finland?

Despite its fairly small size, Finland is home to almost 200,000 lakes. There are five larger lakes that are clustered toward the middle and southern parts of the country, except for one very northern lake.
  1. Lake Inari

    • Lake Inari is Finland's northernmost lake and its third largest. It is situated somewhat far from any centers of industry and its drainage basin is used by reindeer herders.

    Lake Saimaa

    • Lake Saimaa, located in southeastern Finland, is the largest lake in the country. It is surrounded by pine and birch forests and has many islands.

    Lake Oulujarvi

    • Lake Oulujarvi is Finland's fourth-largest lake. It has the largest stretches of water of all Finnish lakes, giving it the appearance of a sea.

    Lake Pielinen

    • Lake Pielinen is in the mideastern part of Finland. It features a diverse landscape as well as a number of islands.

    Lake Paijanne

    • Lake Paijanne is the southernmost of Finland's larger lakes, the country's second largest. As a tourist destination, it offers a museum, along with a 15th century church.
