How to Plan a Day Trip to Capri From Naples

The breathtaking island of Capri has been a resort destination for centuries, and is just a short boat ride from the city of Naples. Roman emperors Augustus and Tiberius were so captivated by the island's beauty that each settled and ruled the Roman Empire from Capri. With its amazing sights and crystal blue waters, Capri remains one of the most popular destinations on the Amalfi Coast.

  1. Town of Capri

      Depart Naples via ferry or hydrofoil from the port Molo Beverello located across from the Castel Nuovo. The trip to Capri takes about 40 minutes by hydrofoil and 80 minutes by ferry. The ferries and hydrofoils normally run from 7:00 a.m. until 9:30 p.m. during peak seasons. Check out the Who Can Help section below for further information on getting to the island.

      Arrive to Capri at Marina Grande. After exploring the shops along the harbor, proceed to your right. This leads to the taxi and bus stands as well as the island's funicular railway. The funicular railway is an inclined railroad that takes travelers through the olive groves and lemon trees of Capri, offering up spectacular views.

      Grab a bus or taxi up to the town of Capri. The roads leading to Capri are narrow and winding, which makes the journey an experience to remember.

      Exit the taxi onto Piazza Umberto I. This is the center of social life on the island where you will find many locals crowded in the bars and trattorias.

      Roam the shops just off the Piazza. Capri is known for its handmade tiles, sandals, jewelry and limoncello, a Southern Italian lemon liqueur. Along Via Camarelle you will find boutiques from the most famous designers in the world.

      Pop into Cathusia Profumi located on Viale Parco Augusto 2a, near the Carthusian Monastary of St. Giacamo. This perfume has been created and sold on Capri by the Carthusian monks since 1948. The fragrances are all natural and include scents such as rosemary and local wild Caprese carnations.

      Visit the ancient ruins of Villa Jovis. This is the largest and best preserved of Capri's Roman villas. The villa was once home to imperial quarters, entertainment areas, exquisite Roman baths and gardens.

      Visit the Villa San Michele. The San Michele was built by Axel Munthe on the site of one of Tiberius's ancient villas. The villa and its gardens contain many pieces of classical statues and ancient archeological items excavated on Capri. On the grounds of the villa you will also find the church of San Michele which was built between 1698 and 1719. The floor of the church was designed by Solimene and portrays scenes of paradise on earth created in majolica tiles by a tile artist from Naples.

      Ride the chairlift from Piazza Vittoria to the peak of Mount Solare. At the top of Mount Solare you will find a few bars and cafes, along with an expansive panoramic view of the Bay of Naples to the gulf of Salerno, the Sorrento peninsula and Capri's Faraglioni, the famous rock formation off the island's coast.

      Walk back to Anacapri from Mount Solare. The trip takes about 45 minutes and is one of the most beautiful walks on the island.

      Head back to Capri for a meal and a glass of limoncello before boarding the funicluar railway back to the Marina Grande and the boat to Naples.
